Boston Celtics Acquire Kristaps Porzingis in Three-Team Deal

Porzingis to Opt into Contract, Bolster Boston's Frontcourt

WASHINGTON, D.C. - June 23, 2023

The Boston Celtics have made a significant move to bolster their frontcourt, acquiring centerforward Kristaps Porzingis from the Washington Wizards in a three-team trade. Porzingis has agreed to opt into his contract extension with the Celtics, ensuring his presence in Boston for the upcoming season.

The deal was finalized early on Friday morning and includes the Celtics sending guard Marcus Smart and a future first-round draft pick to the Indiana Pacers. The Pacers are also set to receive forward Jaden McDaniels from the Wizards, while the Celtics will receive a 2023 Memphis first-round draft pick in return.

Porzingis is a 7-foot-3 Latvian international who has established himself as one of the league's most promising young big men. He averaged 22.1 points and 8.8 rebounds per game for the Wizards last season and provides the Celtics with a much-needed presence in the paint.

The addition of Porzingis is expected to significantly bolster the Celtics' playoff hopes. Boston finished with the league's best record last season but fell in the NBA Finals to the Golden State Warriors. Porzingis' size, athleticism, and scoring ability will be key components in the Celtics' pursuit of an NBA championship this season.
